To Save The Earth, rethink The Economy
This punchline says it all ( 🙌 Attenborough )
A finite world, with finite resources, can't sustain a perpetual growth where success is measured only through GDP for countries (or profit for companies).
We've taken too much, too quickly and the climate crisis we're facing is screaming at us: we need to redefine the success metric in our economy.
Call it the sustainability revolution, Green Growth or the environmental economy, they are all based on similar principles. We can’t keep doing things they way were doing them and need to change how we define and incentivise success.
Scientists, environmentalists and economists have been onto this for quite some time. Those are decade-old concepts, that now makes more sense than ever – to me at last.
Basically, we need to change the success metric of our economy shifting for profits-only (GDP) to also take account of people (social welfare) and the planet (sustainability through clean or low-impact activities).
Some countries are already doing this 👋 Costa Rica 🇨🇷
and some are on the right track 🥰 Jacinda Ardern 🇳🇿
As investopedia states:
"The theory holds that if a firm looks at profits only, ignoring people and the planet, it cannot account for the full cost of doing business."
I can not comprehend why companies who don’t give two f** about the environment and are destroying our home are :
1. Allowed to do so
2. And do not pay more substantially more taxes so that they would be incentivised to do things the right way.
It should be cheaper to buy products with biodegradable packaging instead of plastic non-recylcable ones. Companies that aim to produce carbon-neutral goods should be supported by the government and the economy as they fulfil at least the profits and planet scoring.
Great, but what can we do? Well 2 things :
1. Keep being curious about this and do your own research. Talk about it with friends and family. You are an influencer.
2. Vote for the governments who actively fight global warming and promote social welfare
3. Buy products from companies that have a strong environmental and social policy (ESG). BCorp label is a serious international certification you can rely on.
I recommend reading Attenborough A Life On Our Planet and watching it.
